If you are a lucky recipient of an expensive opal necklace containing precious stones like diamonds, pearls or opals, you will surely want to know how to care for it so as not to damage it in any way. In general, it is not the storage of opal jewelry that is as harmful as it is to them when you are wearing it. For example you might put on your necklace and decide to give your hair another spray with hairspray, or your hands may be moisturized before taking the necklace.
Both of these conditions will cause some kind of damage to many gemstones. Hairspray, deodorant and moisturisers form a film on a stone that interferes with its lightness and can age that beautiful area over the years. Of course, you will never dream of throwing your precious necklace into a jewelry box and other brooches and rings. Doing so will scratch off pearl-like jewelry and may even ruin their appearance. They should be kept in a separate box of velvet or silk to prevent scratching.
Some necklaces are kept in a soft bag, but this is also not good as if you take it, the necklace can scratch itself as its parts will rub against each other. The type of care required for key necklaces will depend on the type of stone on which they are placed. Pearls, opals and diamonds all require different care. Black opal in particular is very rare and precious, but all opals are soft and should never be worn when working indoors or when playing a game. Even taking them out of the warm house and putting them in the cold outside can be dangerous.
Opals should be cleaned with facial tissue or a piece of silk. They should not be smeared with any type of abrasive cleaner. Three or two should not be immersed in detergents to clean them as the back cover may be damaged.
When wearing a necklace the jewelry on it almost always touches the skin. This is especially true of pearls that often come out on top of any situation they contain. Touching the skin means that they absorb body fat and moisture, as well as any other substance such as powder and odor applied to the skin. As soon as you remove that pearl necklace you should wipe it with a free cloth. The cloth may be dry or wet, but if wet the pearls should be allowed to dry before being removed. Pearls can also be washed with warm, soapy water, but never use stinging detergents or anything that contains ammonia. They should not be cleaned with an ultrasonic cleaner.
Diamonds, although very strong, need careful care if they are to maintain their luster. Never use soap to clean diamonds as any small residue will damage the sparkle. You should use warm water with detergent and a free cloth. By all means you should wash them with clean water afterwards.
